Radiation Oncology

Ege University Faculty of Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology with its distinguished faculty members is treating and providing a cure for patients over 40 years. Our history began with a Cobalt-60 treatment machine in 1976 at the Radiotherapy Unit established within the Radiology Department. This Radiotherapy Unit continued its development over the years becoming a Radiation Oncology Department in 1988.

After becoming a department, great progress was made with the integration of a second Cobalt-60 device, a conventional simulator, and auxiliary planning systems resulting with an improvement in treatment capacity and quality. In-hospital multidisciplinary research, protocols, and multi-center joint studies have been initiated.

In 1992 the first linear accelerator, brachytherapy unit, and computerized treatment planning systems were initiated. Following the expansion of the staff members and the completion of their training Ege University Faculty of Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology has become one of Turkey's leading radiotherapy centers.

In 2004 and 2012, with the implementation of advanced treatment devices and equipment, modern external radiotherapy applications such as three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy, volumetric modulated arc therapy and also with the renewal of the brachytherapy unit in 2014, 3-dimensional brachytherapy applications were initiated.

In 2020 with the renovation of the device infrastructure it has become possible to apply the most sophisticated radiotherapy techniques such as stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic radiotherapy.

Our radiotherapy department carries out education, research, and treatment services with its wide and qualified staff consisting of 7 professors, 1 associate professor, 1 specialist doctor, 8 residents, 7 medical physicists, 16 radiotherapy technicians, 9 nurses, 7 secretaries, and 6 assistant staff.

Our department is a reference center with its renewed device infrastructure where thousands of cancer patients are treated every year with its experienced and dynamic staff. In four separate subclinics including various tumor sites, an average of 1500 patients per year is treated with radiotherapy. Patients who have completed radiotherapy are examined at regular intervals in the separately serving outpatient follow-up clinic in our department.

Ege University Faculty of Medicine has maintained its feature of being the leading hospital in the field of oncology within the scope of the qualified health service it has produced for years. Treatment decisions are made in accordance with current treatment protocols for patients who are individually evaluated in multidisciplinary tumor boards formed for each tumor site. The Department of Radiation Oncology provides state-of-the-art cancer treatment for a wide variety of tumor types.

Education and Research

In addition to the Radiation Oncology residency training programme, our department also has a Radiotherapy Physics master's program and a doctorate program, and residents from foreign countries visit for training within the framework of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Our department is involved in many scientific research projects, TUBITAK projects, and projects with national and international participation.

Our department following the principle to provide state-of-the-art service in the field of radiotherapy and residency training since its establishment, was accredited by the Turkish Radiation Oncology Association in 2020 for residency training.

RADIOTHERAPY APPLICATIONS IN OUR DEPARTMENT

1- Image Guided Radiotherapy with Thermal and Surface Camera Technology

"Brainlab ExacTrac Dynamic" System

We are the first users of ExacTrac Dynamic system in Turkey and among one of the few departments that use this system in the world. This system positions the patient with millimeter precision during the treatment and ensures that the patient are followed very precisely during the treatment. In addition to the revolutionary new thermal and surface camera technology, with simultaneous X-ray imaging, we are able to treat all patient groups with exceptional accuracy. In this way, more sensitive treatments can be applied in a shorter time and by reducing the dose to which patients will be exposed. In addition to our treatment planning system, specifically designed softwares (Brainlab Elements) for various disease cites, provide more useful solutions than traditional treatment systems, and it is possible to plan the most appropriate treatments for patients through these systems.

2-Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT)

3-Volumetric Modulated  Arc Therapy (VMAT)

4-Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT)

5-Stereotactic Radio Surgery (SRS)

6-Radiotherapy with Respiratory Gating

7-Image Guided Radiotherapy
